Return To Monkey Island

This blog will be about my opinion of the game, the difficulties, what I enjoyed and not, also, the highlights of the game and what I thought of the ending and the graphics. I will briefly mention the characters and their contribution to the story. If you are new to the series I will give you a brief description of what the game is about without revealing spoilers.

The graphics are puppet form unlike the cartoon animation style in the previous game Curse of Monkey Island which in my opinion was much nicer. The puzzles are obscure, but  well thought out for those who are into puzzle solving games. You can always consult the book of hints given to you by the Voodoo priestess.

As you solve the puzzles and get clues, there will be constant back and forth to various islands that can be daunting in some instances, but the challenge is fun. I will describe a small segment as an example.

The beginning is quite unique as we meet Boybrush, young son of Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine Marley, along with Chuckie his friend as they get some scurvy dogs which look like hot dogs on a stick. As they are playing,  Boybrush sees Guybrush, his dad, and urges him to tell the story of The Secret Of Monkey Island.

The story starts with Guybrush on Melee Island which seems to have seen better days, some of the shops have closed, others are going out of business like the Voodoo Shop and others. There are new pirate leaders at the only restaurant/bar in the town called The Scumm Barr and they are not the friendliest bunch, they sarcastically brush off Guybrush’s idea to fund a ship exploration to uncover the secret of monkey island.

The main theme in this game is that Guybrush is super excited about finding the secret of monkey island at all costs, as you play the game and solve the obscure puzzles one gets the idea that the secret is grand.

One of the parts in the game I disliked is when Guybrush has to craft a mop in order to get on the evil pirate LeChucks ship so he can sail as the ships swabbie to Monkey Island. Now, after getting the info of where to get the wood for his mop, he sets out to the forest on Melee Island and hacks off a branch from what is known as the Mop Tree. This is by far the saddest scene in the entire game, since as he cuts the branch he destroys the entire home of the super adorable animals living there. This could have been done in a much better way. I cannot understand why an entire magical land had to be ruined.

A kind of challenging task is when Guybrush obtains a map from cartographer Wally, and he journeys into the forest just before he destroys it. You have to read the plants and flower alignments to  find  your way through the forest to get to the Melee Island Museum as well.

Guybrush has great people skills especially when he has to convince LeChucks crew to sail to Monkey Island, after a potion required is ruined, and the crew lose interest in the whole voyage.

The game has some interesting parts where Guybrush travels to various Islands of the archipelago to obtain the golden keys to find the secret of monkey island and also face many challenges. Here is a brief description of his adventures and more.

Brr Muda Island:  As the name suggests, the coldest of all the islands, location of ice castle, ice queen, courthouse, rooms in the town center where Guybrush accepts the challenges with Modina the Ice Queen so he can claim the key. The queen has the key on her crown. There is a small town center, the ice quarry where the jail is located. Other than that not much to be found here.

Terror Island: Creepiest of all, this is where Guybrush has to walk through mazes of darkness, gathering various items like sources of light. The graphics are done rather scary. The key will be at the bottom of a cave where Herman Toothrot is staying, Elaine's Grandfather. Not much in the form of life.

Scurvy Island: Elaine Scurvy project. Elaine is gathering as many limes to combat the problem of scurvy among pirates. It seems her character personality changed from The Curse of Monkey Island where she appears to be more assertive. Now, she is more of a supporting character with a softer demeanor. Lime trees all around, some lakes, it's a rather cool place that looks like a resort.

Barebones: The place Stans accountant Ned Filigree is found, he is the only man on the island. It's unclear why Ned dislikes Stan, (Sleazy Marketing Expert)  so he hands over some financial records to Guybrush to extend Stan's jail sentence.

This portion has many trips back and forth between all the Islands and LeChucks ship to solve the puzzles and obtain objects and keys.

Beneath The Monkey’s Head: When the keys are finally obtained, Guybrush has to walk through here and after a series of brain teasers he returns to Melee where he uncovers the secret by opening the safe with the Golden Keys where there is a small chest and in it the secret. When Guybrush exits from the last door, after decoding the wheel (bit of a challenge) we find him in an underground amusement park for pirates. Elaine tells him if he is ready to leave.

Now, as for the ending, unfortunately I found it disappointing. First, after all the cool brain teaser puzzles, the secret turns out to be nothing special. I guess I thought it would be jewels, precious stones or money.

Overall, the game is great and it’s quite easy to learn and play even for a beginner. Now, if you are the type of person that follows a story line I suggest starting with the older games, however, during the game some of the characters refer to past events that happened in previous games. The graphics did change from the older games to this last one. The book of hints makes this game quite simple to play, avoids watching a walk-through when you get stuck.

Conclusion, I started out playing The Curse of Monkey Island. It was my first game I played when it was released back in 1997, on PC and the animation and story line really stuck with me, I think I really enjoyed puzzle games since that time. When I saw that there is now a series of games I will try and play them all to compare.

Deponia

Another point and click puzzle game, with rather obscure clues as to how to solve them, as the main character Rufus embarks on his adventure. This is the first game of a series of four games I will be reviewing all four games as I play them.

Personally, I really enjoyed playing this game and the graphics are anime style. The puzzles were somewhat obscure to solve but not impossible. One needs some time and wits.

The story of Rufus who lives on a junk filled planet Deponia in a town known as Kuvaq, he has no job, no real position in the town, so he lives with Toni who owns a local shop in the town.

Rufus dreams of leaving Deponia for a floating city called Elysium, where he seeks to find a better life. Originally, Deponia was inhabited by humans for a time, until the majority of them went on to live in Elysium forgetting any association with Deponia. Some of the humans remained on Deponia living with the constant amount of trash being dumped on them, and clean water being a rare and valuable commodity.

The story begins with Rufus, the main character attempting to build an escape pod rocket that will supposedly take him to Elysium. Unfortunately, the rocket breaks due to a mishap, and Rufus lands aboard a cruiser run by a militant organization known as the Organon, they regularly dump trash on Deponia and frighten its inhabitants.

While aboard the cruiser, Rufus overhears Bailiff Argus  pursuing a young orbit pixie woman named Goal, where he informs her that she will have to keep quiet about what she saw that in fact Deponia is still populated. Rufus, decides to try and rescue Goal from Argus, he inadvertently knocks her off the ship, she lands in Kuvaq but is unconscious, the town's residents vie for the honor of taking care of her, and waking her up.

Rufus is disliked among the town members as he is jobless, homeless and considered a freeloader. He stays with his ex- girlfriend Toni, a shopkeeper who pretty much regrets her decision to let him stay.

After Goal is taken by the town, Gizmo who encompasses the role of doctor, police, firechief since the town is too small to separate these occupations is assigned to look after her until she wakes up. Gizmo has tried every remedy he has, but nothing seems to work. He further suggests that a strong coffee type drink would be required, but none can be found since the town has limited supplies.

Rufus takes it upon himself to embark on a mission and gather all the necessary improvised versions of ingredients to wake up Goal, and pursue his plan to Elysium.

Once Goal is awake, she is able to communicate to Rufus to contact her fiance Cletus via radio, so she may be taken back to Elysium and in addition she tells him Cletus will reward Rufus generously.

Rufus takes it upon himself to complete the request, it is uncertain whether he has taken a liking to Goal or he is simply using her to accomplish his goal and get to Elysium.

This game requires talking to characters multiple times before unlocking puzzles. There are a few difficult parts that may take time to solve, I will list them here.

First, in the Contact Cletus portion, speak to the Post Office bot and gather information about how you can make a radio call and where the devices are located as well as the three main communication lines.

The idea is to rearrange the Planets Magnetic Field and replace the lightest pigeon with the heaviest one.  It is hard to know at first glance how to do this mini game but it is essential to proceed so even though there is a skip option, you will not proceed until you complete this section.

Once this is completed, Rufus manages to escape with Goal, and the Junk Mine level will start. There are several puzzles here that can prove to be challenging, you may want to consult a walkthrough.

The levels that follow are fun and the ending is nice, I was expecting something entirely different, nonetheless it was pretty cool, sorry no spoilers.

My overall review of this game is I did enjoy it, I found the puzzles to be obscure at some points, but, not frustrating, just needs some time. My recommendation is have some snacks and lots of time when you play this, also patience is an added bonus.

You will always be playing Rufus as a character, you will only be talking to others and basically cheating and tricking them all to accomplish the goal of getting to Elysium.

Why do I choose puzzle adventure/ point and click games? Simple. Aside from enjoying them, I can play at my own pace, stop at any point if I need to and I like using my brain to solve puzzles; at the same time enjoy a nice adventure. The graphics are pleasant, the game itself is not heavy so that helps and anyone really can play it. The controller is easy to use and navigation throughout the game is simple with a friendly learning curve, before you start there is a tutorial.

Now, as a starting point these types of games can be less intimidating and as I mentioned the learning curve is friendly, but, keep in mind that you need to be puzzle solving, brain teaser inclined to enjoy this game.

First shooter games are fun as well with cool story lines, and graphics but, they may require high amounts of memory, processing to load them. Also, learning the controller to move the character can be a bit difficult for a beginner, stopping in a first shooter game you may need to pause it or die in battle. Gaming in my opinion is a matter of taste not popularity.

Monkey Island

This blog will discuss the series of games by Lucas Arts called Monkey Island. I will talk about the games I played in the series, my opinion of the story, graphics, level of difficulty and more.

Monkey Island is essentially a point and click puzzle game mixed in with adventure and an interesting story about a young guy, Guybrush Threepwood (main character)  aspiring to become “a mighty pirate” and save his lady love Elaine Marley.  Guybrush's main struggle is to defeat the notorious zombie pirate (main antagonist) LeChuck. The two characters refer to each other as one another's nemesis. Both characters vie for the affections of Elaine.

The series has six games: The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2:LeChucks Revenge, The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape From Monkey Island, Tales of Monkey Island, Return to Monkey Island.

This series is a great beginning for those just starting out in gaming, much easier learning curve than the first shooter. You can stop in the middle, and it's much slower paced. You just have to solve all the puzzles before parts of the game open up. The puzzles can be somewhat obscure to solve but it's a game of wits. Also, you can choose the option with fewer puzzles, but, I personally prefer the more puzzles option as the game flows better.

The animation/graphics have changed from the game's inception, personally I prefer the third game graphics “The Curse of Monkey Island” as it is more cartoon style. The story is the one of the nicest and the ending is well done.

The story does not really change throughout most of the games, but the puzzles become slightly more complex and the endings are different. I will discuss the games of the series that I played in a separate blog, without revealing too many spoilers.

One of the cool things about this game is that the main character Guybrush Threepwood essentially remains the same, a greedy, self absorbed pirate and just after secrets. Although, he does appear as a good guy.

Another similarity in the game is Guybrush's constant battles with the main antagonist zombie pirate LeChuck as they both want to conquer the seas as pirates and their affection for Elaine Marley. What is rather amusing, is Guybrush is constantly thwarting LeChucks evil schemes using his wits.

The idea of gathering information from various characters, sailing on a ship to different islands and picking up clues along the way is what I personally like most about this series of games.

I also like the fact that there are many supporting characters in the game, it's not just one character facing challenges to achieve a goal, unlock a secret.

If you are looking for a game that is easy as a learning curve, friendly to play, and makes you think when trying to solve puzzles; at the same time has a pleasant story this is the game to start.

Each game of the series is divided into parts as Guybrush completes his tasks to achieve his goal, which sets the scene for the story.

Most of these games can be completed in about 4 hours depending on how you play, so its not over exhausting.

Overall, Monkey Island is a great game to start with when exploring gaming. One thing to note, you do have to have some patience and like puzzles , slow pace to appreciate this game.

Hope you enjoyed this summary, feel free to comment and contribute to this blog.

The Curse of Monkey Island

The Curse of Monkey Island (Introduction)

In this article, I will explain the general flow of the game, its challenges and the characters as well as my opinion of the ending and general comments about the game. I will not reveal too much about how to acquire objects, what to say when, all  that can be viewed in my video on my youtube channel.

This is a point and click puzzle adventure game, involving pirates, gathering information from characters in the game, as well as collecting items. One can interpret Guybrush as a good guy trying to save the love of his life, but, in fact, as one plays the game it becomes fairly obvious that he is just after fame, money and inflates himself and his skills as a “mighty pirate” by his own account.

I accomplished the challenge of completing this game in one sitting.

I would recommend this game to anyone who is starting out in gaming, and to those who want something intimidating and easy to follow. In addition if you like puzzles and brain teasers this is the game to play.

You will need to do a lot of pointing and clicking, looking at objects, and talking to people in order to complete your mission. Also, as you talk to people and dialogue options pop up, use your wits to guess which is the right answer or question. Also, it's a good idea to notice the various objects that appear clickable in any given part of the game.

When we first meet Guybrush, he is stranded in the middle of the ocean in the Caribbean on a little tugboat writing a journal about how he is hungry, and of his love Elaine. As he sails on, he is captured by the evil zombie undead pirate LeChuck, his nemesis, as they both vie for Elaine's affections.

The mission is simple throughout the game, save Elaine.

Part 1:The Demise of the Zombie Pirate LeChuck

As he is drifting in the ocean toward an Island known as Plunder Island , he ends up captured by the evil LeChuck and thrown into the ships holding area where he meets Wally who joined LeChucks team. Guybrush using his wits, collecting items and by convincing Wally he is a wannabe fake pirate manages to escape from captivity. The ship capsizes and Guybrush ends up in the ship's treasure hold where he finds a diamond ring, and other items such as a bag of wooden nickels. He then escapes and ends up on Plunder Island.

Part 2:The Curse gets Worse

Once on Plunder Island, he meets up with Elaine Marley, the love of his life and proposes to her by giving her the ring he found in the treasure hold of LeChucks ship. Wally appears and notices the ring and informs the duo that the ring carries a disfiguring curse, and within minutes Elaine is transformed into a solid gold statue.  Now, Guybrush’s mission begins.

As the game progresses Guybrush faces many challenges to accomplish his mission of breaking the curse and saving Elaine. Upon entering the town of Puerto Pollo on Plunder Island, he first visits the Voodoo Priestess (you have to go to her first before anything in the town opens up) and discovers that Elaine has been stolen by a group of mangy pirates in Danjer Cove. She informs him that the only way to break the curse is to replace the cursed ring with a pure one, and this pure ring can be found on Blood Island. The ring carries a very sad and emotional love story which we learn about once Guybrush gets to Blood Island. The Voodoo priestess also mentions he will need three items to get to Blood Island safely: a map, a crew and a ship. He then sets out on Plunder Island to acquire the items.

Guybrush also buys some chewing gum from the gumball machine, takes some paste and a pin stuck in a voodoo doll, all these items will come in handy much later on in the game.

After the Priestess, the order in which this game is played is of no significance, but there are parts which I found challenging but doable.

First stop, the theater where upon examining items like a pirate coat, a magician hat items appear Guybrush takes them for later use.

Next stop, The Barbary Coast pirate barber shop, he meets the three pirates that he has to convince to join his crew and sail to Blood Island. Each pirate has a different method Guybrush must use to get them to join him. These pirates are Haggis McMutton, Cutthroat Bill, Edward Van Helgen. Guybrush talks to each pirate to see what challenge he must face to get them to join his crew,  and at the same time collects several objects by using his wits to outsmart them.

When Guybrush enters, Haggis McMutton is cutting Captain Rene Rottinghams hair, who later becomes an antagonist to Guybrush. Now, throughout the game in order to acquire the objects needed Guybrush has to get characters to leave by using trickery. Guybrush notices a pair of scissors stuck in the ceiling above the barber chair, Haggis tells him they can cut through anything, they ended up in the ceiling when Haggis was cutting hair too fast and they flew out of his hand and into the ceiling.

Next stop, go through the undergrowth using Haggis scissors to cut through it, and end up at a sign that says snake crossing, get swallowed by the snake. Guybrush manages to escape from the snake and at the same time collect several items needed like a reservation card to enter the Blondebeards Chicken which is a restaurant. Guybrush will use tricks and wits to accomplish his goal.

The most challenging parts to this game:Getting Edward Van Helgen to join his crew, at first you must sufficiently insult him for him to consider any challenge. There is a duel banjo playing part. The idea is to mimic each single note  he plays when he pauses after plucking several notes in succession playing the letter, once you defeat him there is one last thing involving a pistol.

Haggis McMutton challenge is a caber toss, a test of strength as Haggis will not serve under a weak captain. Basically, tossing tree trunks end over end. In this part, a nice cheat trick is done to defeat Haggis.

Cutthroat Bill wants to see riches, treasure. Captain Blondbeards gold tooth gains favor with him once presented.

The Beach: Brimstone Beach Country Club and Smorgy

In this portion, Guybrush will meet a surly cabana boy, who insists that only those who have a membership card can enter the club, use the beach etc.

He is quite surprised when Guybrush presents a card and takes some towels to enter the beach. After Guybrush meets Palido Domingo, a shifty character who lies about knowing about Blood Island, after a few neat tricks, the map is peeled off Palidos back.

The Lemonade Stand: Kenny Foulmouth

After obtaining the mug from Palido, talk to Kenny who is minding the lemonade stand, he has a bottomless mug policy for lemonade and it costs a nickel. In fact, the mug he pours the lemonade in has no bottom, so he cheats customers. Guybrush inadvertently switches the mugs and gets Kenneys pitcher causing Kenny to leave the stand. Fill the pitcher with red dye and head to Palido.

Danger Cove

This is the place where the ship (The Sea Cucumber) is found that Guybrush will use to sail to Blood Island. Using a small rowboat found on the beach, get to the ship get tarred and feathered return to Plunder Island and go straight to Captain Blondbeard who  mistakes Guybrush for El Pollo Diablo (Devil Chicken) he hits him with a pan, and Guybrush ends up inside the Sea Cucumber ship. There are two other characters Captain Fossey (first mate) and Captain LeChimp. The idea here is to get Fossey to leave and take the map where Elaine is hidden and steal the ship.

At the theater, upstairs Guybrush will see some old style controls, which is in fact a light puzzle and to solve it use the map from the Danjer Cove pirate ship.

Part 3 Three Sheets to the Wind

When this part begins, Haggis will ask if Guybrush is more of a fighter captain or a captain who uses wits, this will determine the level of difficulty either in the sea battles or in the sword fighting insults.

Captain Rottingham’s ship appears and he boards the Sea Cucumber, challenging Gubrush to a sword fight, in which he explains that the only way to win is to use rhyming insults. Guybrush loses and in turn Rottingham takes the map to Blood Island. All the while, the crew are ignoring Guybrush.

The second challenge once all items are acquired, is to fight the pirates as you sail the seas and plunder their treasure. As treasure is plundered, Guybrush will sail to Puerto Pollo Port, where Kenny the former lemonade stand owner is now selling cannons and heavy artillery. It is from him that the upgrades to the ship's cannons are done.

Remember during the sword fighting insults, rhyme as best you can, sometimes the correct answer will not always appear so this might have to be done a few times.

The most challenging part is defeating Rottingham; his insults are more peculiar than the other pirates, but once he is defeated it's actually quite funny how his personality changes from the cocky, obnoxious guy to a kind of wussy wimpy child.

Part 4 The Bartender The Thieves his Aunt and her Lover

This is my favorite part of the game, as the puzzles are relatively simple to solve. The characters are much more interesting. I will classify each section of this part and talk about it in detail without too many spoilers. It is here that we learn the significance of the ring, and much more.

The first part is that when the ship encounters a storm and ends up wrecked on blood island, Haggis informs Guybrush that the crew have decided to leave him and return to the barber shop, thereby a mutiny. He further states that the ship is pretty damaged and needs major repairs, it's also low on tar for some reason and some needs to be found as soon as possible or they are all stuck there for good. Guybrush is on his own, he picks up a bottle and walks away.

Now, another series of adventures begin. There are several areas on Blood Island, no mention of a town.

The Hotel

This is where Guybrush meets Madame Xima, a fortune teller, the object is to retrieve five tarot cards that will become very handy later on in the game.

The bartender Griswold Goodsoup revealed after he gets the ingredients to relieve him of his hangover, that is the only way he will talk. He reveals the story of his family the Goodsoups, they were quite wealthy and well known on Blood Island, specifically his aunt Minnie Strone Goodsoup or Minnie who had a weakness for pirates, she became engaged to one but he broke her heart by stealing her ring and leaving her. Later revealed to be LeChuck.

So, the next task is to take the recipe book that appears on the bar, in it there is the recipe to cure the hangover, a pepper, hair from the dog that bit you, and one egg. Sounds weird and gross!

Once Griswold is given the recipe, he gains his demeanor and tells the sad story of his family The Goodsoups. We learn, he is the proprietor of the Hotel. His great Aunt Minnie Goodsoup fell in love with a pirate later revealed to be the infamous LeChuck, he basically took advantage of her stole her diamond ring after proposing, left her at the altar and sold the diamond to smugglers.

There are many puzzles to solve and secrets to learn in this level, each is interesting on its own.

The Cannibal Village(Strange Lights)

This is where Guybrush meets an Islander, Lemonhead who informs him that this village was once full of cannibals, and that the volcano in the village is lactose intolerant. Also, it is revealed that a ceremony is to be held near the volcano where a sacrifice is to be made.  Upon hearing all this, Guybrush uses his to get to the ceremony. This is one of the shorter segments of the game, as its mainly collect stuff and trick.

The Cemetery

Here we meet Stan, a life insurance policy salesman who after being freed from his captivity in a coffin by Guybrush. He will give you some stuff that will help you throughout the game. After, Guybrush will cash in a life insurance policy, once he proves his untimely repeated death and obtain lots of money.

The Crypt

To enter the crypt Guybrush has to die a few times, which was predicted to him earlier on in the game. (no spoilers). Here we find the southern belle of Blood Island Minnie Goodsoup's skeleton ghost, as she was known and learn the story of her heartbreak with the evil pirate LeChuck. She is still wearing here wedding band even though she is distraught, but, it helps later on the in the game.

The Beach
You will obtain objects from this area and later speak to a mysterious stranger known as the Flying Welshman who will take Guybrush to skull island once he is given what he needs.

Skull Island

I really thought this part of the game would be the most challenging and I expected an actual skull to be the symbol of the island, instead it was quite different. You will not spend too much time in this level, as all you do is climb up the mountain, get lowered down to the cave in the mountain use an umbrella obtained from Griswold to land you safely in front of the cave where you will meet the smugglers of Blood island King Andre and his partner. The idea here is to outsmart the smugglers in a game of poker to obtain the Goodsoup diamond, which King Andre informs Guybrush will cost an awful lot of money.  Using the lots of money from Stan will help here a lot, as well as the tarot cards obtained from Madame Xima the fortune teller. Once the diamond is obtained, the Flying Welshman takes Guybrush back to Blood Island.

Elaine
Area where Elaine's statue is waiting for the curse to be broken, once the Goodsoup diamond ring is placed on her finger the curse is broken. That's when LeChuck and his gang of pirates has caught up with Guybrush and Elaine and takes them hostage.

Part 5:Kiss of the Spider Monkey

In this part, LeChuck has cast a child spell on Guybrush making him a small child. He finds himself in the carnival of the damned. Guybrush as a child needs to make it to the Roller Coaster of Death to get to Elaine. A series of potion mixes and trickery, eventually Guybrush returns to his normal size.

Part 6:Guybrush Kicks Butt Once Again

This last part is the shortest where Guybrush is riding in rail cars on the Roller Coaster of Death, once again he has to use a series of tricks to outsmart LeChuck and eventually kill him. The end of the game is quite endearing and predictable where Guybrush and Elaine are off on the Sea Cucumber.

Conclusion:

This is by far one of my favorite games, it has some challenging parts like the banjo duel with Edward Van Helgen at the beginning, the sword fighting at sea insults. The part I liked the most was Blood Island as most of the puzzles were simple to solve and there was more of a story. I highly recommend this series for a beginner, someone who will enjoy point and click brain teaser puzzle games, with nice animation. It is a friendly game as well, no violence you can stop if you need to and go on. These can be played in no particular order. Overall, I enjoyed this game and will be reviewing the rest as I play them.
